A new Wisconsin law that goes into effect Feb. 1 requires owners of one- and two-family homes to install carbon monoxide detectors in them if they are heated by natural gas or have gas appliances.

The owners of apartment buildings, hotels, motel and inns are already required to install carbon monoxide detectors under a law that went into effect last April.

“The only way a dwelling unit is excluded from the requirement is if it has all electric heat,” said Hudson Building Inspector David Gray.

For homes with natural gas heat or appliances, the detectors are required:

  • In the basement if there is a fuel-burning furnace or appliance there;

  • Within 75 feet of fuel-burning appliances in areas of the home not used for sleeping;

  • Within 15 feet of each sleeping area;

  • Within common hallways that are within 75 feet of a dwelling unit with fuel-burning appliances; and

  • Inside any apartment unit that has an attached garage.

    Homeowners who have questions regarding the new rules are invited to contact Gray at (715) 386-4775 or dgray@ci.hudson.wi.us or Fire Inspector Dave Krupich at (715) 386-4270 or dkrupich@ci.hudson.wi.us.
