Phipps exhibit closes April 3
A series of exhibitions featuring silver leaf on vellum by Richard Barlow, metal sculpture by the late M.D. Bigger, and many more works by various artists will be on view through April 3 in The Galleries of The Phipps Center for the Arts.
A series of exhibitions featuring silver leaf on vellum by Richard Barlow (Minneapolis); metal sculpture by M.D. Bigger; ceramics by Susan Feigenbaum (Eden Prairie); mixed media on wood by Daphnae Koop (Minneapolis); mixed media by Ryuta Nakajima (Duluth) with Dr. Berned Budelmann, Dr. Yuzuru Ikeda, Dr. Jesse Purdy and Dr. Shuichi Shigeno; and acrylic paintings by Christine Willcox (Minneapolis) will be on view through April 3 in The Galleries of The Phipps Center for the Arts.
The center deeply regrets the loss of Michael Bigger, an accomplished sculptor and inspiring teacher, who died Feb. 16. He will be deeply missed by the arts community in the Twin Cities area, as well as nationally and internationally, where he has touched the lives of so many through his art. A memorial is being planned for this spring.
The following is the artist statement Bigger wrote for this exhibition, “My work is concerned with formalist issues such as form, space, proportion and materials. Other considerations are implied motion, balance, intersection and penetration of elements, and final finish. I work in all scales, but large scale is my favorite expression. I am a builder, not a story teller. The physicality of the sculpture is of primary importance; the narration is less important. I prefer to provide the viewer with an impression, rather than actual information. I think that sculpture should command the viewer's attention and stir his imagination. The work in the exhibition deals with two different issues. The works that contain Plexiglas deal with reflection and refraction. The black aluminum works deal with the formalist issues of sculpture.”
Galleries hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday noon to 4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.
