David Mataya Design opens Hudson office

David Mataya thinks outside the box when it comes to design. His business card sets the tone about his creative thinking. Not only does Mataya bring years of success in design to the table for his clients, he brings a depth of knowledge rare in this age of electronic immediacy.

David Mataya thinks outside the box when it comes to design. His business card sets the tone about his creative thinking. At first glance it appears to be a normal size and shape, two-dimensional calling card. Nothing could be further from the truth. It pops open to reveal a 3D cube with information on every face and the interior is cleverly divided into quarters.

Mataya, a Rochester native, moved from the Twin Cities to Hudson 14 years ago when he started to work at Andersen Windows in their newly formed in-house creative services department.

Although, he has a studio arts degree from Augsburg College, his work experience before Andersen Windows was in graphic arts with various agencies.

After 12 years, with the downturn in the economy, Andersen shut down the department and stopped most of its marketing efforts, outsourcing what it needed.

“The one thing I had not done before was strike out on my own,” said Mataya. “I wondered if anyone would want to work with just me.” In 2009 he started his own firm, David Mataya Design and worked out of his Hudson home. In February this year, he made the leap to opening an office in the Hudson Professional Building at 901 Fourth St.

Mataya found out that clients did indeed want to work with him.

“I have a fun variety of clients,” said Mataya. From designing signage for a candy shop to a resource library, he has a passion for not only design but creating the message as well. “I work with packaging and brand identity for new start-up businesses as well as rebranding for existing companies.”

Not only does Mataya bring years of success in design to the table for his clients, he brings a depth of knowledge rare in this age of electronic immediacy.

“I bring a deep history of the craftsmanship into the process,” said Mataya. “Working in a print shop in high school gave me an appreciation for things that are going to be lost. That primary experience of working with typeface, handmade art and photography still influences me.”

The creative process for Mataya starts with the planning process by learning what the client needs and wants to planning a strategy.

“A lot of what I do is in terms of logo design and basic brand identity,” said Mataya. “I help them plan how they are going to socialize their brand identity. I want them to know I am their best resource.”

“It is all about trust,” said Mataya. “As a client you go into it with a lot more confidence after going through this process of planning.”
