Although the season ended back in March, Hudson’s wrestlers have continued to find opportunities for both competition and improvement, according to Raider varsity coach Chris Hansen.
“Generally, our off-season focuses on the two international styles of wrestling — freestyle and Greco-Roman,” he said. “American high schools and colleges wrestle folkstyle, but the rest of the world wrestles freestyle and Greco-Roman, including in the Olympics. Some kids choose just one of the styles while most participate in both styles.
Hudson has had considerable success in recent years. Both Kyle Crain and Cole Tobin became high school All-Americans (Tobin in freestyle, Crain in Greco-Roman) while Nick Larson and Crain were on the Wisconsin dual meet team that placed third in the country last year.
Earlier this month, fourteen Hudson wrestlers traveled to the state tournament held each year in Wisconsin Rapids. The tournament had 763 participants in freestyle and 576 in Greco-Roman.
Sophomore Derek Schindler had the most success, placing second in the state in Greco-Roman and third in freestyle.
“Derek is relatively new to these styles so I am very pleased with his success,” Hansen said.
Another double place-winner was current seventh-grader Sawyer Massie, who placed fourth in Greco-Roman and sixth in freestyle.
“Sawyer wrestled fourteen matches over the two days. That is a grind that a middle school wrestler is not used to,” Hansen said.
Hudson had two other place-winners in Greco-Roman. Sophomore Zach Lohman placed fourth while fifth-grader Jacob Anderson placed fifth. In freestyle, freshman Mathias Tobin placed fifth and fifth-grader Mitchell Anderson placed sixth.
Although he did not place, Tim Feia won two matches.
