HHS students plan to empty parking lot to honor troops

Hudson High School students have planned to honor all branches of the armed services and the sacrifices they make with an event on Friday, May 27. As part of a Memorial Day remembrance, students who be joining the armed forces after graduation will also be recognized.

On Friday, the goal is to have an “Empty Parking Lot.” HHS students will not drive to school but will give up a privilege most high school students have and take for granted according to organizers. The symbol of giving up driving to school for a day is to show recognition of freedom, one of the many freedoms that are defended by those who serve in our nation’s military.

According to Ben Peters, one of the organizers of the event, “We are not making a political statement; we are standing together and showing our support for our troops on an amazing day. By choosing whether or not they drive to school, students can take part in a united school effort to honor our troops.”

Another group of seniors is planning a collection of items to mail to troops in Afghanistan including gum, socks, dental products and handwritten notes.

A program including an honor guard and flag-raising along with the naming of HHS alumni currently serving in the military and some remarks by guests begins at 8:15 a.m.
