A St. Croix Emergency Medical Services crew received a Heroes of EMS Award from Regions Hospital last week for its actions bringing a severely injured patient to the hospital in the middle of an ice storm.

Paramedics Ben Wasmund and Chris Kustrich, along with EMTs Jannelle Anacker and Michael Bahneman, responded the crash on I-94 at milepost 3 last Nov. 21.

It took rescue workers 45 minutes to remove a woman from a vehicle that had slid underneath a jackknifed semitrailer on the icy highway.

The St. Croix EMS crew inserted a breathing tube to the woman’s lungs and administered medication to keep her sedated on what turned out to be a two-hour trip to Regions.

After traveling at 15 mph on the way to St. Paul, the St. Croix EMS ambulance came to a complete stop when it reached a traffic jam in the city.

A St. Paul Fire Rescue crew ultimately met the St. Croix EMS ambulance on the freeway, bringing more medication and taking the patient the rest of the way to the hospital.

St. Paul Fire Chief Tim Butler presented the awards to the St. Croix EMS crew and St. Paul Fire Rescue Capt. Mike O’Keefe in a May 17 ceremony at Regions Hospital.
