Raider junior Max Hawksford couldn’t overcome a tough draw in the first round of the WIAA State Tennis Championships last Thursday and lost a 3-6, 4-6 decision to Verona’s Alex Boomgarden.
Raider head coach Dave Dahl said Boomgarden was a formidable opponent.
“We knew going in this was a tough opponent, as he was seeded in the top 16,” Dahl said. “As it turned out, Boomgarden just missed finishing in the top eight in the tournament.”
Dahl said Hawksford is normally a strong server, but struggled to hold serve in his match against Boomgarden.
“Max did not hold serve until he was down 1-4 in the second set, and came very close to tying things up at 5-all but fell just short,” Dahl said. “Max put up a good fight and I know he would love a rematch, but he’ll have one more shot his senior year to get back down there.”
Hawksford finished his junior year with a record of 15-4 while earning first team All-Big Rivers Conference and All-Academic BRC honors.
“He was disappointed with the loss, but when he looks back on the season he has many reasons to be proud of what he accomplished,” Dahl said.
