Minnesota shutdown brings campers to Wisconsin

Wisconsin News
The Wisconsin Association of Campgrounds said it got a few hundred calls from Minnesota and Iowa residents looking for places to camp last weekend.

It’s day seven of the state government shutdown in neighboring Minnesota.

Majority Republicans in the Legislature refuse to accept new tax hikes suggested by Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton. Wednesday, the governor proposed either a temporary income tax surcharge for those making over $1 million a year or a $1 a pack increase in the cigarette tax.

House Speaker Kurt Zellers said the GOP is keeping its promise not to raise taxes and grow the size of government.

Dayton calls it an all-or-nothing approach that’s not “responsible leadership.”

As the shutdown continues, Wisconsin campgrounds are getting more visitors because the Minnesota state parks remain closed. The Wisconsin Association of Campgrounds said it got a few hundred calls from Minnesota and Iowa residents looking for places to camp last weekend.

More truckers are resting on the western Wisconsin side of the border because Minnesota’s rest areas are closed.
