Mitch Lewis had three hits, including a double, and Brent Blegen had an RBI double in the seventh inning but the Hudson River Rats couldn’t dig themselves out of a five run hole and dropped a 5-2 decision to the River Falls Fighting Fish in a St. Croix Valley Baseball League game Sunday at Grandview Park.

The loss followed a 7-3 Rats victory on the arm of pitcher Brian Sparstad over the Osceola Braves Saturday night in Osceola.

Hudson, now 3-7 in SCVBL play, will travel to SCVBL co-leader Menomonie to take on the Eagles (8-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wakanda Park. They host a pair of games over the weekend, Saturday, July 16 at 1 p.m. against the Elmwood Expos (6-5) and Sunday, July 17 at 1 p.m. against the New Richmond Millers (6-5).

Last Sunday Hudson fell behind River Falls 5-0 after five before Kirk Krumrei led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and later scored when Ben Christensen hit into a fielder’s choice.

Hudson got another run in the seventh when Lewis led off the inning with a double and scored one out later on a double by Blegen.

The Rats had a runner on in the eighth and runners at first and second in the ninth but couldn’t produce any more runs.

Travis Borowicz took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs, three earned, on 10 hits while striking out five and walking none in seven innings of work. Paul Johnson pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits while striking out four and walking one.

Sparstad earned the pitching victory Saturday night in Osceola but complete statistics were unavailable.
