Audition for ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’
Auditions for The Phipps Children’s Theater intergenerational production of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 27 and 29, from 6 to 10 p.m.
Auditions for The Phipps Children’s Theater intergenerational production of “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” with the book and lyrics by Jennifer Kirkeby and music by Shirley Mier, based on the poem by Clement C. Moore, will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 27 and 29, from 6 to 10 p.m. Callbacks will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 10:30 a.m.
Director Kasey Jean Tunell is looking for a cast of 20 boys and girls, approximate ages 6-16, three adult women and five adult men, approximate ages 17-80. Families are encouraged to audition together. Those auditioning should bring a photo or school picture for the director. All will be asked to read from the script and sing a few bars from a short, up-tempo Christmas song of their choice. All should bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. The ability to play a musical instrument is an advantage. All will also be asked to read from the script. Actors should bring a list of any possible rehearsal conflicts. All should come prepared to move.
Rehearsals will begin the week of Oct. 3, generally Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be five performances Dec. 8-11, on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m., as well as Sunday at 2 p.m.
In the play, it is four days before Christmas, and feature writer Clement Moore must come up with his best story yet. The New York Evening Post needs a holiday feature story and President James Monroe is counting on reading it to his own family on Christmas day. Moore has writer’s block, but soon the magic of Christmas begins. He becomes inspired by sugar plum fairies who help guide him in creating the most popular Christmas poem ever told.
Tunell staged “The Dixie Swim Club,” “Back to the 80’s,” “The Big Bad Musical,” “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” “Steel Magnolias,” and “The Cemetery Club” for The Phipps, the female version of “The Odd Couple” for River Falls Community Theatre, as well as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” for Theatre of the Spirit.
Sheila Pelzel is the music director. Her acting credits at The Phipps include Vernadette in “The Dixie Swim Club,” a wife and narrator understudy in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” and Mrs. Murphy in “Madeline’s Christmas.”
