Jordan Cullen, 16, of Hudson, won the Chequamegon Short and Fat Bike Race held in Cable, Sept. 17. Cullen finished almost a full four minutes ahead of the field of 900 riders. His time of 48:41.6 is the second fastest time in the 29-year history of the event, averaging 19.7 miles per hour over the 16-mile off-road course.
The race starts in downtown Cable, finishing at Telemark Lodge. Cullen accelerated away alone, a mile into the race, and never looked back, driving hard all the way to the finish on his Trek Top Fuel Mountain Bike, which a teammate loaned him for the race.
“I wanted to win, but I was also going for the record time of 47:36 set by Jeff Hall back in 1993. I didn’t break the record, but I’m really happy to win this prestigious race,” said Cullen.
Primarily a road and cyclocross racer, this was his first time racing the Short and Fat. He will likely be back to defend the title in 2012. Jordan stated, “You have to be 18 to race the Chequamegon 40, so next year, the Short and Fat is still my only option.”
Cullen has been racing bikes since he was nine years old, and is the current Category 1/2 Wisconsin State Road Race Champion. He races for Minneapolis Bicycle Racing Club sponsored by Flanders Cycles.
Cullen is sophomore at Hudson High School. His parents are Jim and Carla Cullen, and he has an older sister Maren, 18.
