Members of the Hudson Home and Garden Club (HHGC) recently worked on the landscape and gardens in front of the library. The club donated the funds to purchase the plants and donated labor.
The club was assisted by members of the Master Gardener's Association of St. Croix Valley and had design help from JoAnn Ryan of the Master Gardeners Association.
The landscaping and planting around the library is an ongoing project. Last year HHGC did the entrance way by the police department and around the building along Vine Street where they planted crabapple trees and shrubs. This spring they planted several gardens by the entrance to the library. They made Baby Bear's Garden with flowers started by seed by children who attended in the story times. HHGC also planted two other gardens: a butterfly garden in front of the windows with plants that attract butterflies and a sensory garden with herbs and other plants that appeal to senses.
Future plans include putting in a retaining wall on the west side facing First Street. Raising the funds for landscape blocks will be Boy Scout Isaac Yerry who is using the project for his Eagle Scout award. HHGC will help with the foundation and planting next spring. HHGC will also continue to maintain the gardens, using funds from the sale of calendars. The club's 2012 Hudson Area Calendar is now on sale at Associated Bank branches, County Market, Et Cetera, the Hudson Hospital Gift Shop, the Hudson Marina, Lakefront Framing, The Phipps Center for the Arts Gift Gallery, and Seasons on St. Croix. Profits from the sale of the calendar will be used for the library and other beautification projects in Hudson.
