Fiesta Loca restaurant will feature many of the family recipes that owner German Duran has enjoyed since his boyhood in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
He grew up in a town south of Puerto Vallarta immigrated the United States as a youth.
“We’re bringing a little bit of Mexico to Hudson,” says Duran’s wife, Jill, who will assist him in the operation of their new business.
Fiesta Loca – meaning crazy party in Spanish – will open Thursday, Dec. 1, in the Carmichael Centre, just east of the Target store.
The menu lists 74 economically priced entrees, including chicken, beef, pork and seafood burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, chimichangas, quesadillas and more.
Most entrees are priced at around $8 or $9. The most expensive item on the menu is a steak, chicken and shrimp fajita at $15.95.
Fiesta Loca will also offer a lunch special every weekday between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The lunch menu will include 15 items priced at $5.25 to $7.25, and served with rice, beans and a choice of ground beef, chicken, pork or picadillo.
The restaurant also will offer an assortment of appetizers, beverages and desserts - plus a few American selections, such as cheeseburgers, French fries and chicken strips.
The desserts will include specialties like deep-fried ice cream and bionicos (fresh strawberries, bananas and apples with a sweet sauce poured over the top).
Margaritas will top the drink menu, which also includes Mexican beers and soft drinks, as well American beers and soft drinks.
Head chef Santiago Alcala also is a native of Jalisco, and grew up in the restaurant business.
“He brings all his family’s recipes, too,” says Jill Duran.
German (pronounced Her-mon) Duran has long enjoyed cooking and is excited about running his own restaurant.
“I think we’ll have a pretty good restaurant,” he said. “We like to do what we do with passion. We like to do it the best.”
Jill Duran added, “We want to offer a family feeling – like you’re family when you come in, not just a customer.”
German Duran was the manager of the Fiesta Mexicana restaurant in the Plaza 94 shopping center for five years. When the ownership of the Fiesta Mexicana changed, he decided it was time to start his own restaurant.
He comes from a family of restaurateurs. One of his brothers owns the popular Mariachi Loco restaurant on Spruce Street near the UW-River Falls campus. An uncle has a Mexican restaurant in River Falls.
German and Jill met as high school students in Long View, Wash., south of Seattle. They’ve been married 18 years and have five children. The youngest is just four months old.
The Durans moved from Washington state to River Falls six years ago to be near German’s family. Since then, Jill’s parents have followed them to River Falls.
