Letter: Great feat of kindness

Dear Editor

Rarely do positive social interactions get recognized with the same enthusiasm as do those of a negative nature. This opinion letter is an attempt to balance the scales and provide positive reinforcement of a behavior I observed on Thanksgiving weekend in Hudson.

Many travelers, especially those of a rare vintage, run into mistakes while neglecting the comforts of electronic GPS and automated directions. While purchasing some food at a convenience store just off of exit four this Sunday I overheard a conversation between one of these lost travelers and one of Hudson’s sons by the last name of Eggen (Erik I believe). Mr. Eggen was taking his time to provide written directions to this lost individual, who would have spent much more time searching aimlessly without his directions. That gesture in and of itself is worthy of note, however what tipped the scales for me to write this letter is what Eggen did after providing directions.

He went on to offer more of his time and volunteered to personally guide this person to their destination. Few people would have spared the time to write directions in this situation, and even fewer would have been as kind as to physically lead someone to their destination. As I got into my vehicle I saw the travelers following Mr. Eggen, and was refreshed by the selflessness he demonstrated.

Because of the increasing rarity of these events occurring, and the already existing rarity in their reporting, the community of Hudson should know about it. There are those who reside amongst you still capable of great feats of kindness. This was a great example of the community excellence Hudson is capable of achieving.
