UW-River Falls senior Tiffany Gregorich scored her 1,000th career point as the 21st-ranked Falcon women’s basketball team soared to a 72-56 victory over St. Scholastica last Wednesday at Karges Center.
Last Saturday, Gregorich scored the first five points of the game to spur a 13-0 opening run as the Falcons won their WIAC opener, 67-46, at UW-Platteville and improved to 6-0 overall.
Gregorich needed nine points to reach the 1,000 point plateau going into last Wednesday’s game against St. Scholastica. She reached the milestone by making a free-throw less than three minutes into the second half.
The Altoona native finished with 18 points to lead all scorers while also recording five steals and six assists, both team highs.
Saturday at Platteville, Nikki Guhr led UWRF with 16 points and Gregorich added 10 in a 67-46 victory.
The Falcons will continue WIAC play this Saturday, Dec. 10 at UW-Oshkosh and Wednesday, Dec. 14, at UW-Stout. They will host Simpson College in a nonconference game Saturday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m.
Basketball: Falcon men win WIAC opener
The 25th-ranked Falcon men’s basketball team opened its WIAC schedule with a 68-57 victory at UW-Platteville Saturday night to improve to 5-2 overall.
Shane Manor led UWRF with 13 points while Chris Palmer recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds in his first start of the season.
UWRF led 34-22 at halftime and opened up a 17-point lead three times in the second half.
The Falcons outrebounded Platteville 40-31 and shot 53 percent from the field (27-of-51) compared to 39 percent for the Pioneers (23-of-59), who fell to 4-3 on the season.
The Falcons will continue WIAC play at UW-Oshkosh (2-2) Saturday, Dec., 10 before returning home to host UW-Stout (3-4) Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at Karges Center.
Hockey: Men skate to sweep at Superior
The fourth-ranked UW-River Falls men’s hockey team remained unbeaten over the weekend by sweeping No. 10 UW-Superior, 4-1 Friday and 2-1 Saturday, Dec. 2-3.
In the opener of the two-game series on Friday, the Yellowjackets struck first with a goal 10 seconds into the second period. But UWRF responded with goals by Jason Yuel and New Richmond’s Jake Calleja to take a 2-1 lead into the third.
Justin Brossman scored a power play goal with under two minutes remaining and Alec Hageman added an empty-netter with 26 seconds left to make the final 4-1.
Adam Cardwell and Jon Schreiner scored second period goals and goaltender Scott Lewan and the Falcon defense made them stand up in a 2-1 victory Saturday night.
For the second straight game Superior outshot the Falcons, 30-16, but Lewan came up with 29 saves to keep UWRF undefeated.
Women skaters suffer first loss
The UW-RF women’s hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, 2-1, in overtime to UW-Superior Friday night at Hunt Arena before bouncing back to beat the Yellowjackets by the same score on Saturday.
UWRF needed a power play goal from Darion Bruyere with 3:51 remaining to force overtime Friday night, but Superior got a goal at the 3:39 mark of the extra session to pull out the win.
Alyssa Jackson’s power play goal with 5:29 remaining in the third period Saturday lifted the Falcons to a 2-1 victory. Katie Batter scored just 17 seconds after the opening faceoff to give UWRF a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons, now 8-1-0 overall, 7-1-0 in NCHA play, will host St. Norbert College (4-6-0, 3-4-0) in a two-game series this weekend at Hunt Arena. Game times are 7:05 p.m. Friday and 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9-10.
