HFD offers holiday fire prevention

The Hudson Fire Department has some precautionary tips that can greatly reduce the chances of fire during the holiday season

The Hudson Fire Department has some precautionary tips that can greatly reduce the chances of fire during the holiday season.

Christmas trees

--Select a tree that has fresh needles and a sticky trunk.

--Do not place your tree close to a heat source or over a heat vent.

--Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove.

--Remember to check the water level daily.

Holiday lights

--Inspect lights for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in insulation, and broken sockets.

--If you shake the lights and some go on and off, do not use that strand.

--Do not link more than three light strands, unless directions indicate it is safe.

--Periodically check wires. They should not be warm to the touch.

Candle care

--Make sure candles are in a stable holder and not where they can be knocked down.

--Never leave candles unattended or leave the house with candles burning.

--Never put lit candles on or near a tree.

The HFD also reminds residents to make sure that smoke alarms are installed on every level of a home, test them monthly, keep them clean and make sure the batteries are fresh. And remember to practice your home escape plan.
