Two days after posting a come-from-behind 103-82 victory over River Falls last Thursday, the Raider boys’ swimming and diving team turned in a stellar performance at the Saturday, Jan. 7, Simley Invitational.
Senior Charlie Skinner had a hand in two first place finishes at Simley, including posting the fifth fastest time of any Wisconsin swimmer this year in the 200 yard individual medley — 2 minutes, 2.71 seconds.
Skinner also swam the anchor leg behind his younger brother Willie Skinner, August Jorgensen and Lucas Rukavina on the Raiders’ first place 400 freestyle relay team. The foursome posted at winning time of 3:26.26, the fifth fastest in Wisconsin this season.
Charlie Skinner also took second in the 100 butterfly in 54.33 seconds and Rukavina took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.42 while Willie Skinner was second in the 50 freestyle in 23.26 seconds and was one of three Raiders to finish in the top ten in the 500 yard free.
Willie Skinner placed third in the 500 free in 5:21.68 while Rukavina was fifth in 5:26.49 and Sawyer Arndt finished eighth in 5:36.88.
Las Thursday at River Falls, the Raiders trailed the Wildcats, 48-45, halfway through the meet before coming back for a 103-82 victory.
Willie Skinner won both sprint events—the 50 freestyle in 23.28 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.29. Miles Townsend took second in the 100 free in 52.79 seconds to spur the Raider comeback.
Charlie Skinner won the 100 butterfly in 54.48 seconds and had the fastest time in the 200 individual medley but was disqualified for using a controversial combination of arm stroke and dolphin-style kick.
Hunter Frey won the diving competition, edging River Falls’ TJ Baldini 153.50 to 153.15.
Arndt took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:47.4 before the Raiders captured two of the top three spots in the 200 freestyle relay to extend their lead.
The Raider “A” team of Townsend, Willie Skinner, Jorgensen and Ty Davis combined for a first place time of 1:36.69 while the “B team of Nicholas Lundberg, Jack Boylan, Justin Aherns and Louis Hoffman edged River Falls’ “B” team for third place with a time of 1:52.03. River Falls finished in 1:52.39.
Evan Groehler won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.15 while the team of Charlie Skinner, Arndt, August Jorgensen and Willie Skinner wrapped up the night with a first place time of 3:31.86 in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Raiders have a busy week ahead. After returning to Simley for a dual meet this past Tuesday, Jan. 10, they host Rice Lake Thursday, Jan. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the middle school before competing in the two-day Superior Invitational Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14.
