North Hudson prepares for centennial

• North Hudson’s railroad car shops

North Hudson’s most famous landmark for more than three-quarters of a century was the railroad car shops. Opened in 1872, the facility was used to build and repair railroad cars and was the area’s largest employer for many years. The shops closed in 1957. Many of the buildings have been refurbished, but still stand in what is now an industrial area on the east side of Galahad Road.

The village of North Hudson will celebrate 100 years in 2012 with activities being planned for some time in June, probably June 9 and 10.

Mary Wekkin has been in charge of most of the preparations and is currently completing a cookbook that will feature 300-plus recipes, including some of the Pepper Fest winners. The book also has historic photos, stories and history tidbits spread throughout.

The book is currently at the printers and pre-sales are being accepted for $19 per book through Feb. 17. After that date, the cost will be $24.

More centennial celebration details will be released in the weeks and months ahead.
