The Raider girls’ hockey team dropped an 8-3 decision to the fifth-ranked Eau Claire/Altoona Stars last Thursday, Jan. 12 at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire.
The Stars scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead before each team scored three times in the second period to keep it a one-goal game. But Eau Claire/Altoona erupted for four goals in the third period while holding the Raiders scoreless and posted the 8-3 win
After Eau Claire/Altoona had taken a 1-0 lead, Hudson’s Sydney Squires tied things up 1 minute and 20 seconds into the second period, assisted by Racheal Knoke.
The Stars got an unassisted goal exactly two minutes later but Hudson took just ten seconds to respond when Alex Willi found the back of the net, assisted by Knoke, to tie things up again, 2-2.
Squires gave Hudson a 3-2 lead with her team-leading tenth goal of the season, unassisted, at the 4:44 mark but the Stars scored twice in the final 2:07 of the second period to go ahead, 4-3.
Four unanswered goals by Eau Claire/Altoona in the final frame made the final 8-3.
Raider goaltender Nali Mullan finished with 30 saves in the game as Eau Claire/Altoona outshot Hudson, 38-28, including 14-6 in the third period.
The Raiders, now 3-8-1 overall, 0-2-0 in the Big Rivers Conference visited top-ranked Onalaska (14-2-0) for a nonconference game this past Tuesday, Jan. 17 and resume BRC play at Chippewa Falls (10-5-0, 0-2-0) Thursday, Jan. 19 before returning home to host Black River Falls (7-7-1)in a nonconference matchup Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at Gornick Arena.
