The Raider girls’ hockey team won its third consecutive game, beating the New Richmond Co-op Tigers, 10-0, last Tuesday, Jan. 31 in New Richmond, before having its three-game winning streak snapped in a 4-1 Big Rivers Conference loss to the Eau Claire-Altoona Stars two nights later.
At New Richmond, the Raiders scored early and often and came home with a 10-0 victory over their rivals.
Alex Willi started the scoring five minutes into the game, taking a pass from Racheal Knoke and beating Tiger goalie Baily Lund. At 9:46 of the first period, the Raiders caught the Tigers behind a line change and Sara Iacobello scored, assisted by Ali Takkunen and Willi, to make it a 2-0 game after one.
Takkunen scored her first varsity goal at 6:48 of the second period, outbattling Tiger defenders in front of the net. Shannon Hartzell provided the assist.
A minute later, Willi scored on a wraparound goal, assisted by Squires and Maddie Misura. At the 11:00 mark of the period, Willi was on the receiving end of a penalty but was able to get the puck on Squires’ stick. Squires took the puck from the defensive blue line on a breakaway and top-shelved the puck past Lund.
Thirty-six seconds later, Squires scored again, assisted by Willi and Knoke, and a minute later, Knoke scored a power-play goal, assisted by Willi and Takkunen, to send Hudson into the locker room with a 7-0 lead.
The Raiders were able to roll all of their lines in the third period and added three more goals. Squires scored twice, one unassisted and the other assisted by Abby Patterson, and Takkunen scored the other goal, assisted by Iacobello.
Nali Mullan stopped all 12 Tiger shots to notch her second shutout of the season, while Lund made 16 stops for New Richmond.
The Raiders winning streak was stopped at three games, however, with a frustrating 4-1 loss to the fourth-ranked Eau Claire-Altoona Stars last Thursday, Feb. 2 at Gornick Arena.
Hudson struggled to put shots on the Stars throughout the game. And trailed 4-0 after two periods of play while mustering only nine shots on goal. Two solid scoring chances in the second period dinged off the goal pipe.
In the middle of the third period, Raiders defender Caitlyn Bjornstad held the puck at the blue line and passed along the boards and behind the net to Willi. Willi fought off the Stars defenders and centered the puck to Squires, who gave the Raiders their only score of the game. It was also the only shot on goal in the third period for Hudson.
Mullan stopped 29 ECA shots, while the Stars’ Jordyn Bunce made nine saves for her team.
The Raiders take a 1-3-1 BRC and a 6-10-2 overall record in to their regular season finale on Thursday, Feb. 9, in a 5 p.m. matchup against the Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Cardinals at Gornick Arena. It will be the final home game for five Hudson senior skaters — Willi, Knoke, Hartzell, Lexi Byler and Brooke Dierks — who will be honored prior to the game.
