Letter- Voter ID makes sense

Dear Editor

After reading Roy Sjoberg’s letter “Voter ID Makes No Sense,” I felt compelled to respond. I normally don’t read the letters, but his caught my eye. I have always thought that requiring some sort of photo ID to vote made sense and was looking forward to reading a compelling argument against it. I consider myself an Independent and appreciate both sides of every debate.

However, Mr. Sjoberg didn’t offer any argument against the new requirement for a photo ID. It was nothing more than a quarter page of ideological rant. He says “...he (Rep Knudson) should not be putting truly unnecessary roadblocks between those in his district who are poor, elderly, disabled or students their Constitutional right to vote.” Are photo IDs really an unnecessary roadblock?

The elderly and/or disabled can’t open a bank account to deposit their Social Security checks without one. Students can’t drive, see an R-rated movie or try to sneak into a bar without one. My wife gets a huge smile on her face when asked to show one when she orders a glass of wine and I don’t think $28 for a state ID is an outlandish amount of money for the “poor” to spend so they can exercise one of the most sought-after freedoms this world has ever known. Mr. Sjoberg, next time drop the political agenda, apply some common sense and make an intelligent argument as to how requiring a photo ID will suppress the vote...maybe you’ll win me over.
