The Raider boys’ basketball team cut a 14-point Chippewa Falls at halftime lead down to four in the fourth quarter of last Friday night’s WIAA regional semifinal in Chippewa Falls but the Cardinals held on for a 59-54 victory to advance to Saturday night’s regional final.

The Cardinals lost to La Crosse Central, 62-48, Saturday night to end the season with a record of 16-8 while Hudson’s season came to an end the night before with a mark of 12-11.

After trailing 31-17 at the half, the Raiders cut two points off the Cardinal lead to make it a 12-point game, 41-29, at the end of three. Sophomore Alex Herink led a fourth quarter surge that saw Hudson outscore Chippewa Falls 25-18, but the Cardinals were able to hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Herink, who was named to the All-Big Rivers first team this week, posted a double-double with 27 points and 20 rebounds in the loss. Senior Kellen Pearson, who joined Herink on the five player All-BRC first team, finished with 13 points.

Junior Ethan Stanchik contributed eight points and three assists in the game and senior Jordan Delao scored five points while senior Luke Miller added a free throw.

Chippewa Falls’ Tyson Kalien, who was named the All-BRC Player of the Year for the second straight season, led the Cardinals with 39 points and 12 rebounds.

In addition to Herink, Pearson and Kalien, the rest of the All-BRC first team included Rice Lake teammates Wally Ellenson and Alex Cuskey.
