Hudson Middle School is the best of the best

Feb. 28 was a “banner” day at Hudson Middle School. Hudson Middle School received the Middle School of Excellence Award for 2011-2012.

  • Middle School of Excellence Award

Feb. 28 was a “banner” day at Hudson Middle School. An all school celebration, included brief speeches by Principal Dan Koch, Assistant Principal Jim Dalluhn, Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten and State Senator Sheila Harsdorf. Also, on the stage was school board member Pat German.

The stars of the event were the 1,300 students who precisely entered the gymnasium in less than 13 minutes and exited the same way.

It was not those skills that earned the award. It was much, much more.

Hudson Middle School received the Middle School of Excellence Award for 2011-2012. It also earned the same award in 2009. Hudson is the largest middle school in the entire state based on student population.

The Association of Wisconsin School Administrators and Department of Public Instruction instituted this program in 2007 through AWSA’s Middle Level Commission to recognize the good work that middle schools are doing.

In order to apply for the Middle School of Excellence Award, a school must first be named an Exemplary Middle School.

Criteria for this designation are based on WKCE scores, and include one or more of the following:

  • Significant improvement in reading and/or math scores during the past three years, with improvement in the past year; and/or,

  • Reading and/or math scores in the top 10 percent in the past year.

    Hudson Middle School was recognized for being in the top 10 percent of all schools in math.

    Each exemplary middle school is encouraged to apply for one of four Middle School of Excellence awards, given to a large, medium, small, and high poverty school. A panel of judges, including middle school principals and a representative from the Department of Public Instruction, judge the applications. They examine the schools’ efforts and accomplishments in the areas of collaborative leadership and professional learning communities; personalization and the school environment; and curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

    The type of success that Hudson Middle School has achieved can only come about through the efforts of a committed team of teachers, support staff, students, and supportive parents led by a strong administrative team. Your school has worked hard to build this type of community of learning and we are pleased to honor Hudson Middle School as a 2011-12 Middle School of Excellence.

    “Some excel because they are destined to, most excel because they are determined to,” said Jim Lynch, who presented the award on behalf of the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators.
