Tobin NCAA qualifier with Badgers

Former Hudson state wrestling champion Cole Tobin will represent the University of Wisconsin at the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships after earning an automatic qualifying spot by finishing eighth at the Big Ten Championships March 4 in West Lafayette, Ind.

Tobin, a redshirt freshman at Wisconsin, posted a 1-3 record in the heavyweight bracket at the Big Ten Championships and takes an 8-16 record into the NCAA Championships March 15-17 in St. Louis, Mo. He will wrestle Kent State’s Brendan Barlow in the first round.

Wisconsin finished the Big Ten championships in 12th place with nine team points. Penn State took the title for the second-straight year with 149 points, followed by Minnesota with 134 points and Iowa with 126 points.

Tobin’s teammate, senior Ben Jordan, received an at-large bid at 165 pounds and will also represent the Badgers at the NCAA Championships.

Tobin was the 2009 WIAA Division 1 state heavyweight champion as a senior at Hudson High School, compiling a record of 48-2. He set Raider school records for most pins, wins and team points for a career and season as a senior, and finished his high school career with a record of 138-35.

Cole is the son of Art and Dawn Tobin. His younger brother, Mathias, just completed his sophomore season as a member of the Raiders wrestling team.
