At its meeting on Thursday, March 8, the St. Joseph Board moved to change the position of clerk / treasurer from an elected position to an appointed position. The move comes after the actions of the previously elected clerk that eventually led to prosecution.

Town Chair Dan Gavin provided a preliminary job description to the board, which can be viewed at the town hall, or requested electronically at email@townofstjoseph.com, which he said was a “work in progress.”

“We can put what we want in here. If we wanted to require them to have a Ph.D. we could,” said Gavin, although jokingly admitting, “if we did they would require more compensation.”

While the current copy presented contained a generic description and qualifications, Town Chair Gavin added several other line items in the document, leaving them blank, so that the other members of the town board may read through the preliminary job description, and add what they feel would either be beneficial, or necessary for an applicant of the position.

According to Gavin, “This is just a starting point. Take this list and make your own additions and subtractions, so we can have a very clear document for the town.”
