Wisconsin, Marquette reach Sweet 16; UW-Whitewater wins Div. III title

Wisconsin and Marquette will both play on Thursday night, March 22, in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

The Badgers are up first at 6:15 p.m. on CBS against top-seeded Syracuse at the East Regional in Boston.

Marquette learned yesterday that they’ll play Florida, after the Gators crushed Norfolk State 84-50. That game is scheduled for 9:17 p.m. Thursday on TBS. It’s part of the West Regional in Phoenix.

Third-seeded Marquette advanced with a 62-53 win over No. 6 Murray State in Saturday’s third round. The fourth-seeded Badgers earned their first back to back Sweet 16 appearances in school history with a 60-57 victory over fifth-seeded Vanderbilt on Saturday.

UW-Whitewater is Div. III national champ

UW-Whitewater celebrated its national men's basketball title Sunday, March 18.

The Warhawks rode around town on fire trucks. A ceremony was held at the team's home arena in Williams Center on the Whitewater campus. They won the NCAA Division III crown Saturday night with a 63-60 victory over Cabrini in Salem, Va.

Chris Davis, who was named to the coaches' All-American first team last week, scored 12 points after being held scoreless in the first half.

Whitewater became the first Division III school ever to win the national football and basketball men's or women's crowns in the same school year.

It's only happened twice among the big schools in Division 1. Florida won the football and men's hoop titles in the 2006 term. Tennessee won the national football and women's basketball crowns in '98.

UW-Green Bay women advance

The UW-Green Bay women will play Kentucky tonight (Monday, March 19) in Round 2 of their NCAA Tournament at Ames, Iowa.

The Phoenix, with the No. 7 seed, eliminated the host team Iowa State 71-57 on Saturday night.

No. 2-seeded Kentucky advanced with a 68-62 first round victory over McNeese State. A win tonight would give Green Bay its second straight appearance in the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.

Both the Phoenix and Kentucky made the second round for the third year in a row. And both have the players of the year in their respective conferences, Julie Wojta for Green Bay and A'dia Matthews for Kentucky.

Wojta had a tournament-high six steals on Saturday night, and she's averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds a game. Matthews leads Kentucky with just over 15 points per contest. Tonight's game starts around 8:45 p.m. on ESPN 2.
