Hunter safety class held in Somerset

Young people in the St. Croix Valley area interested in hunting and recreational shooting are invited to enroll in a certified Wisconsin Hunter Education course to be held at the Somerset Middle School. A person does not need to be a Wisconsin resident to enroll in this course and there is no age specific requirement.

Anyone born on or after January 1, 1973, must successfully pass a Hunter Education Course in order to purchase a hunting license in the State of Wisconsin. This includes bow hunting licenses.

Registration is Tuesday, April 3, only and late enrollment is not accepted. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. starting on Tuesday, April 3, and ending on Thursday, May 10. Field Day is Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The registration fee for this course is $10. A parent or legal guardian is required to attend the registration and orientation with any minor student to sign the state required enrollment forms. Class size is limited to 50 students and enrollment is on a first in line, first registered basis. Pre-registration or on-line registration is not available.

All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR customer ID number as part of the course graduation criteria and students must provide this number to the instructors during registration. Students may obtain a customer ID number by calling (888) 936-7463 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. or by visiting the DNR Service Center in Baldwin.

Course organizers advise people interested in taking Hunter Education in order to meet the training requirements for concealed carry may be better served by taking a course offered by the NRA, a technical college or a private business that is specific to concealed carry training. This Hunter Education Course provides a 10-minute lesson segment regarding hunting with handguns. Hands-on training during this course and/or live-firing of handguns is not provided. The laws, legal aspects or potential ramifications of concealed carry are not covered at any time during this course. Contact the Wisconsin Department of Justice with any questions regarding concealed carry requirements and the laws.

Any parent who would like to enroll a child with special needs is asked to call the lead instructor at least two weeks in advance of the course start date in order to arrange for special needs accommodations.
