UW-River Falls sports update: Manor, Gregorich earn postseason hoops honors
A pair of Altoona High School graduates have been honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D3Hoops.com following stellar senior seasons with their respective UW-River Falls basketball teams.

A pair of Altoona High School graduates have been honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D3Hoops.com following stellar senior seasons with their respective UW-River Falls basketball teams.
Shane Manor was named to both the NABC and D3Hoops.com Men’s All-Region first teams and Tiffany Gregorich was named to the D3Hoops.com Women’s All-Central Region third team.
The pair helped lead their respective teams to the 2012 NCAA Division III National tournament, the first time in school history both the Falcon men’s and women’s basketball teams have reached the NCAA Tourney in the same season.
Manor, a 6-foot, 5-inch, 190 pound forward, was named to the 2012 All-WIAC first team earlier this year. He led the Falcons in scoring, averaging 17.5 points a game, and free throw shooting (115-of 148, .777).
Manor helped the Falcons to the WIAC Playoff Championship and a berth in this year’s NCAA Tournament. UWRF finished the season 20-8 and 12-4 in WIAC play. The WIAC Playoff title was UWRF’s first ever in the history of the 14 year old tourney.
Gregorich, a 5-5 guard, was previously named to the All-WIAC first team for the third straight year. She earned honorable mention to the team in 2009. In 2010 and 2011 she was named to the WIAC’s All-Defensive team.
Gregorich tied for the team lead in scoring, averaging 13.1 points a game in 2012. She also averaged 3.2 rebounds a game and led UWRF in assists (89) and steals (63).
Gregorich broke the 1,000-point mark during the season and she ended her career with 1,283 points.
The Falcons finished the year with a 21-7 record and were 12-4 in WIAC play. UWRF advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in school history and the first time since the 1995 season. The 21 wins are the most by a Falcon team since the 1989 season when the Falcons finished 23-5.
Yuel NCHA Co-Scholar-Athlete
UW-River Falls’ senior forward Jason Yuel of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been named the 2012 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Co-Scholar-Athlete. Yuel and UW-Eau Claire’s Tyler Jundt shared the league’s Scholar-Athlete award.
Yuel has been named to the UWRF Dean’s List eight times. He has captained the Falcons for three seasons and has won multiple awards for excellence in economics at the university.
Yuel has been a volunteer speaker at the local middle school and has participated in “Bike for Kids” programs. This year Yuel was voted to the All-NCHA team after posting 27 points in 27 games for the Falcons and leading an offense on a team that was ranked as high as third in the nation this season.
Yuel was named to the All-Academic team for the third straight year.
Batters hockey All-American
UW-River Falls’ sophomore forward Katie Batters of Champlin, Minn., has been named to the American Hockey Coaches Association CCM Hockey West All-American second team.
Batters led the Falcons with 19 goals and 32 points this season. She picked up two assists in the team’s 4-2 win over Adrian in the NCHA O’Brien Cup championship game, and she scored a goal in the team’s 4-2 loss to Gustavus Adolphus in a NCAA playoff game.
Earlier this year she was named to the All-NCHA team. Batters is the 10th Falcon to earn All-American honors in the 13 year history of the sport.
