11 DI teams advance to state competition

Hudson will again have an impressive presence at the Destination Imagination state tournament with 11 local teams participating.

Hudson had 22 teams that performed at regional competitions held last month in Spooner and in Prescott. The state competition will be held April 14 in Stevens Point.

Teams advance to state by finishing first or second in the rankings of their challenge. There are six challenges that the teams can choose from at the beginning of the DI season back in October.

There are 10 regional tournaments across the state. The St. Croix Regional tournament in Spooner has become the biggest in the state of Wisconsin. Next year it will be held in Hudson.

DI coordinator Liz Malanaphy said the success of Hudson teams is due in part to support from volunteers, especially “DI parents and siblings.”

Seven of the Hudson teams that did not advance to state are pictured with this story.

Said Malanaphy, “We are very proud of our state-bound teams, but equally excited by the number of new and returning teams and managers who made it through this year and attended the regional tournament! The process of guiding a team of young people through the team-led research, writing, building and production of these short plays takes a great deal of creativity and patience! It is important to acknowledge how challenging it is to employ the hands-off approach we advocate (i.e. no adult input or interference). In DI, everything is truly up to the kids!

Our kids are incredibly creative, but our team managers continue to be the reason DI is so engaging and successful in Hudson. It is the process that will help foster creativity in each and every one of them, and empowering the students in this way is life-changing.”

The DI season next year will begin with registration in September. People can find more information, and registration forms on the DI website at www.hudsonwidi.org.

DI competition ends for some teams

The St. Croix Regional DI tournament was held in Spooner on March 24. The Hudson School District sent 18 teams to that tournament. Due to scheduling issues, four other teams attended another regional tournament in Prescott in February.

While 11 teams advanced to the state contest, 11 others reached the end of their season. Coordinator Liz Malanaphy praised all of the teams for their creativity and imagination and team managers and parents for their ongoing support.
