Hudson Raider baseball team starts off 2-2

After opening the season with one win in three games against Minnesota opponents last week, the Raider bats came alive in their first Wisconsin competition this past Monday, April 9.
Hudson’s offense erupted for ten runs while pitchers Kellen Pearson and Austin Evenson combined for a two-hit shutout in a 10-0, five-inning victory over New Richmond at Grandview Park. It was the first time in 30 games Hudson scored in double digits and the first shutout for the Raiders since the 2009 sectional against Chippewa Falls.
Hudson opened the season with a 6-2 victory at Simley last Tuesday, April 3, before dropping an 11-2 decision to Stillwater Thursday, April 5. They came up just short in a 9-7 loss to Mahtomedi Saturday, April 9, before evening this record at 2-2 with Monday’s 10-0 win over New Richmond.
The Raiders will open Big Rivers Conference play at home this Friday, April 13, at 4:30 p.m. against fourth-ranked Eau Claire Memorial.
Monday against New Richmond, the Raiders scored six runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-0 lead before ending the game in the bottom of the fifth when Drew Pheneger scored on an RBI single by Miles Lewis.
Pheneger had two hits and scored twice in the win while Lewis and Pearson each had a hit and drove in two runs. Charlie Altman also had a hit and two RBI while Mike Hommes singled, scored twice and drove in a run.
Pearson went the first two innings on the mound, allowing one hit whole striking out four and walking none. Evenson earned the save with three innings of work, striking out two and walking three while allowing one hit.
In the season-opener last Tuesday at Simley, the Raiders scored three times in the top of the fourth to snap a 2-2 tie and added a run in the seventh to post a 6-2 victory.
Hommes had a two-run single to highlight the Raiders’ three-run fourth inning and finished with two hits, including a double, three runs scored a stolen base.
Pheneger added two hits and an RBI while Josh Evenson had two hits and scored a run while Austin Evenson and Brett Steinwagner contributed a hit and RBI each.
Stef Smith picked up the win in relief of starter Todd Mork. Smith held Simley scoreless over the final five innings, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking none.
Last Thursday at home against Stillwater, the Raiders allowed three unearned runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to allow Stillwater to take a 6-0 lead and the Ponies went on to an 11-2 victory.
Hommes was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and runs scored while Lewis and Matt Monette each had a double.
Hudson rallied for six runs in the seventh inning Saturday against Mahtomedi but came up short in a 9-7 loss to the Zephyrs.
Mork and Pearson led the offense with two hits apiece while Hommes had a two-out double in the third inning to plate Pheneger with the Raiders’ first run of the game.
