Lexi Smith homered twice in the opener and Kindra Witthus went deep in the nightcap as the Raider softball team swept Menomonie, 15-3 and 4-2, in its Big Rivers Conference opener last Thursday, April 26 in Menomonie.
Smith did it all in game one, limiting the Mustangs to two runs over the first six innings in the circle while cracking a three-run home run and a grand slam at the plate.
Witthus went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the win and Meghan Eisenmann had two hits, including a double, and three RBI while Maya Triebold was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Hudson banged out 12 hits in the victory.
“We had a very good offensive game,” Raider coach Jim Revoir said. “Once again the hitting became contagious.
Sophomore pitcher Alli Koepke gave up a run in the ninth to make the final 15-3.
The Raider bats cooled off in the nightcap but the defense came to the rescue, making a couple of nice plays to preserve a 4-2 victory.
Witthus doubled, homered and drove in a pair of runs on offense and was involved in a couple of plays in the seventh to end a Mustang threat.
Hudson led 4-2 when Menomonie put runners on second and third with no outs. Sophomore Cheyenne Massie scooped up a hard hit ball to left field and threw home to Witthus to get the first out of the inning. The next batter hit a sharp ground ball to freshman shortstop Morgan Fisher, who quickly threw home to Witthus for the second out. The next batter also grounded to Fisher to end the game.
“We played much better defense in the second game, “Revoir said. “Now we know we have to work on combining both offense and defense in the same game to improve.”
Coming up this week is a double-header scheduled for Thursday, May 3 at Rice Lake, then at 10 a.m. contest on Saturday, May 5 at St. Croix Central. The team will return home on Tuesday, May 8 to face Eau Claire North in another double-header set to start at 4 p.m.
