A man charged with felony sexual assault has been acquitted.
A St. Croix County Circuit Court jury handed down a not-guilty verdict for Joseph A. Lemasters, 25, Schofield, Thursday, May 3, on one felony count of second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16 years old.
The jury took one hour, 45 minutes to return the verdict following a two-day trial.
Lemasters was charged in connection with an incident in December 2005 in Woodville when the alleged female victim was 13 years old. The case was filed March 24, 2011.
The criminal complaint claimed the girl had sexual intercourse with Lemasters, became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl on Aug. 24, 2006.
According to the complaint, Lemasters admitted having sex with the girl and acknowledged the child was his, but thought she was 17 at the time.
Neither a paternity nor DNA test result was introduced during the proceedings, apparently at the request of the girl’s family, a court official said.
