Raider softball bounces back from loss

With the exception of a little glitch in a doubleheader at Rice Lake last Thursday, the Raider softball team put on quite an offensive performance last week.

Hudson opened the week by sweeping River Falls, 7-3 and 15-0, last Tuesday, May 1. After being swept Thursday, May 3 at Rice Lake, 13-3 and 12-2, the Raiders bounced back to post double-digits in two games Saturday, May 5, defeating St. Croix Central 16-2, and Somerset, 12-0.

Hudson, now 4-2 in the big Rivers Conference, 7-3 overall, hosted Eau Claire North (1-5, 3-7) in a doubleheader this past Tuesday, May 8 and will play in the Robbinsdale-Cooper Tournament Saturday May 12 before visiting BRC leader Chippewa Falls (8-0 12-1) for a doubleheader Tuesday, May 15.

Raider head coach Jim Revoir, the former coach at St. Croix Central, said it was difficult returning to Hammond and sitting in the visitor’s dugout last Saturday.

“It was hard to coach against my longtime friend and mentor, Jimmy Anderson,” he said. “But it was great to see so many of the girls that I have coached in the past. They all came out of the dugout to greet me at home plate for the pregame conference. It was pretty cool.”

Revoir said freshman Kendra Little and sophomore Alli Koepke pitched great games against St. Croix Central and Somerset, respectively, while junior Kindra Witthus led the team at the plate, going 6-for-7 with three home runs and two doubles in the two victories.

“We gave a lot of girls some playing time Saturday,” Revoir said. “All-in-all, we hit the ball really well as a team in both games.”

Witthus hit two home runs and senior Maya Triebold went deep three times to lead the Raiders to a doubleheader sweep of River Falls (1-7, 2-11) last Tuesday, as Lexi Smith and Stephanie Little picked up the victories on the mound.

Witthus had two doubles and scored twice and Smith doubled and scored a run in the first game of last Thursday’s doubleheader at Rice Lake, but the Warriors (6-2, 11-3) outhit the Raiders 19-5 and scored seven runs in the final three innings on their way to a 13-3 victory.

Rice Lake collected 15 more hits while holding Hudson to single runs in the second and third innings of the nightcap to complete the sweep, 12-2. Hudson committed a total of 11 errors in the two losses.
