The Raider boys’ tennis team put up a good fight a Saturday’s Big Rivers Conference Tournament at Eau Claire North, but in the end neither Hudson nor any of the other five teams at the tourney could prevent Eau Claire Memorial from winning its 16th straight BRC championship.
The Old Abes swept every flight to finish with a total of 42 points while Hudson battled for individual titles in four flights and finished second with 25 points. Chippewa Falls was third with 17 followed by Menomonie wit 13, Eau Claire North with 8 and River Falls with 7.
“We did what we needed to do today to set ourselves up for the subsectional tournament,” Raider coach Dave Dahl said, referring to this Monday’s subsectional on the Old Abes home courts. “Memorial was clearly the best team out there today and we were clearly the best of the rest. With six new faces in the lineup this year, I’m, pretty happy with our results.”
Max Hawksford reached the championship match at No. 1 singles, where he fell to Eau Claire Memorial’s Matt Delmastro, 6-4, 6-1.
The Raiders’ No. 1 doubles team of Jeff Dahl and Griffin Robertson also reached the title match, losing to Memorial’s Alex Rentzepis and Drew Schaefer, 6-3, 6-3 to finish second. Hawksford, Dahl and Robertson each earned All-BRC First Team honors for their play.
The Raiders’ Max Cherrier played for the No. 4 singles title, dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Memorial’s Matt Lindsay, while Jake Shreffler and Sam Duchow lost to the Old Abe duo of Colin Loshaw and Austin Auleta in the No. 3 doubles final.
Hudson took third in every other flight. Cal Johnson and Jack Schulte both won their opening matches and lost in the second round to reach their respective third place match. Johnson came back to beat Sid Young of River Falls, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles while Schulte topped Richard Stewart of Menomonie, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, Ben Klundt and Dan Botethi beat Eau Claire North and lost to Eau Claire Memorial before defeating Drew Tonsager and Orville Black of River Falls, 6-4, 6-2, in the third place match.
The Raiders end the regular season with a dual record of 15-3, including 4-1 in BRC play. Their only conference loss was at the hands of Eau Claire Memorial, 6-1, last Thursday in Eau Claire. Hawksford accounted for the lone Raider victory, defeating Kyle Wogahn, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Monday’s (May 21) subsectional at Eau Claire Memorial gets underway at 8:15 a.m. Monday’s qualifiers will advance to the sectional tournament Wednesday, May 23, in Marshfield to compete for spots in the WIAA State Individual Tournament May 31- June 2 in Madison.
“The guys have made consistent progress, and we’re looking forward to a strong finish to the season,” Dahl said.
