Jennifer Nilssen was careful about choosing just the right location for her business O-I-SEE Youth Strategies, which opened its office in April.
“I choose the Healing Waters Health Center because I wanted the whole family to come to a spot where they could all be comfortable,” said Nilssen.
Nilssen, a native of Edgar, came to this area to study at UW-River Falls. She completed her Master of Science in educational psychology with an emphasis on counseling in 2010. While working towards her master’s degree she worked as a reading assistant at River Crest Elementary School in Hudson. Her undergraduate degree was in marketing and speech communications.
“My love and passion has always been working with kids,” said Nilssen, who over the course of time did substitute teaching in five different districts. “I discovered there was a real need for student supportive services outside the school setting.” Thus O-I-SEE Youth Strategies became a reality.
O-I-SEE offers reading assistance to students in kindergarten through fifth grade and tutoring for all ages and guidance for all ages.
“Regarding the guidance, educational consultant part of the business, everything that is done inside the school for students I can do on the outside,” said Nilssen. “It allows me to build a bridge between the parent and the educator.”
“In the guidance area we work with self-esteem, behavior, personality profiles and career exploration,” said Nilssen, who is qualified to offer parents advice regarding a student’s Individual Education Plan.
Nilssen sees herself as a type of mediator between the teacher and the parents, working in the best interest of the student. She is currently licensed in both Wisconsin and Minnesota as a school/guidance counselor to help children (K-12) academically, socially and emotionally.
“I want the educators to think of this as another avenue which would enable their students’ success,” said Nilssen. A master teacher will join O-I-SEE this summer to offering tutoring in math and reading.
