All ten members of the Raider boys’ tennis team will be making the trip to Marshfield Thursday, May 24 for the WIAA sectional round of play.
The Raiders had a perfect day Monday at the subsectional in Eau Claire and enter Thursday’s sectional tied with Eau Claire Memorial, each with 24 points.
Thursday’s qualifiers will advance to the WIAA State Tournament May 31- June 2 in Madison,
“Our goal going into today was to get everyone through to the sectional and that’s exactly what we did,” Raider coach Dave Dahl said. “I’m real proud of this group. They earned themselves some nice seeds and took advantage of their favorable position in all flights. I’m pretty sure this is the first Hudson tennis team to have everyone advance out of the subsectional.”
Max Hawksford is one win away from his third straight trip to state after disposing of his Osceola/Somerset opponent, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while the Raiders’ No. 1 doubles team of Jeff Dahl and Griffin Robertson is also one win away from state after taking care of their Menomonie opponents, 6-0, 6-1.
The rest of the Raiders had to win two matches to stay alive. Cal Johnson won 6-0, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-2 to move on at No. 2 singles, and Jack Schulte won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 7-6 to advance at No. 3 singles, while No. 4 singles player Max Cherrier won 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 7-6.
In the other doubles matches, Kody Owens and Ben Klundt won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot, while Jake Shreffler and Sam Duchow won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-2 to advance at No. 3.
Sectional play gets underway at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Marshfield High School courts.
“Things get tougher at Marshfield, but I like the way we’re playing and I know the guys are up for the challenge,” Dahl said.
