Dear Editor,

Let’s put politics aside and ask one simple question. What do we want our state to be like in the future? Wisconsin does not belong to politicians; it belongs to us, and we decide the direction we’d like to see it go.

My wife was interviewing her grandfather about life in the Great Depression. One thing he said always stood out to me. He said the Great Depression didn’t hit Wisconsin that hard, because everyone pitched in to help their neighbors. If someone didn’t have a tractor, their neighbor came over with his. People took their extra crops over to their neighbors who had less. How are we going to handle our hard times?

When I moved here 11 years ago, Wisconsin was still that place where everyone helped when it was needed. Is it still? That’s up to us. We are judged by how we respond in bad times. The same is true of our state. June 5, we are making long-term decisions for Wisconsin. We should support the candidate who is moderate and believes that we all need to pitch in to pull ourselves up. That was the Wisconsin of my wife’s grandfather, and I think that’s the Wisconsin we all really want. Support Tom Barrett on June 5.
