The Hudson City Council received some welcome news Monday night on an Amery restaurateur’s plans to open a restaurant in the old Hudson post office on Locust Street.

Russell Evenson closed on the purchase of the building from Donald Maysack and Sean Maysack on June 15, Mayor Alan Burchill reported.

“I would have thought Russ would be here tonight for the victory celebration,” Burchill quipped, alluding to lengthy process Evenson had to go through to secure financing for the project.

“It’s good to see it moving forward,” said District 5 Alderperson John Hoggatt.

The council happily approved a Class B liquor license for the Postmark Grille.

The restaurant isn’t expected to open until the end of summer.

Evenson is having the interior of the brick building renovated and constructing an addition to house the kitchen.

Burchill noted that he had seen a work crew at the site earlier in the day.

In other action, the council:

  • Approved a $97,871 bid from Fahrner Asphalt Sealers on crack-sealing or patching portions of Coulee Road, 11th Street So., Heggen Street, Crest View Drive, Stageline Road, St. Croix Street and the Lakefront Park boat launch parking lot.

  • Set a public hearing on a proposal to allow indoor gun ranges in general business (B-2), light industrial (I-1) and general industrial (I-2) districts for 6:50 p.m. Monday, July 23. The hearing will precede a regular City Council meeting at City Hall, 505 Third St.

  • Authorized advertising for bids for new playground equipment for Burton Field.

  • Authorized a Destination Imagination team from Hudson High School to continue development of information landmarks for Weitkamp, Lakefront and Prospect parks.

  • Approved a new one-year agreement allowing San Pedro Café to locate garbage dumpsters on city property.
