Artists are sought to participate in the Spirit of the St. Croix Days juried art fair on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and 23.
The Spirit of the St. Croix Days is an art, food, and music event sponsored by The Phipps Center for the Arts in partnership with the Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau. The fair will feature up to 80 regional artists with high-end fine arts and traditional crafts for sale. This annual event draws thousands of visitors to Hudson’s historic downtown and scenic park on the St. Croix River.

Season tickets now on sale
The theater series consists of the amusing, yet poignant "On Golden Pond," the romantic comedy "The Movie Game," the reaffirming drama "It’s a Wonderful Life," Disney's musical "The Little Mermaid Jr.," and the heartwarming "The O’Conner Girls."
The music series highlights harmonica master Corky Siegel and fiddler Randy Sabien, the Minnesota Percussion Trio, the chamber ensemble the Blue Baroque Band, guitarist Billy McLaughlin and Friends, and the British-style Lake Wobegon Brass Band.
The organ series features an eclectic program by Chris Gorsuch; music from the golden age of Hollywood by Jerry Nagano; a varied program, including holiday tunes, by Nathan Avakian, the winner of the American Theatre Organ Society’s (ATOS) 2009 Young Theatre Organist Competition; selections from the Great American Songbook by David Wickerham, the ATOS 2011 Organist of the Year; and a program of virtuoso duets and solos by organist Lynn Trapp and pianist Andrew Staupe.
The special events series includes "Dances Chances Circumstances: Grimm," the Classic Big Band with the Nostalgics vocal quartet, the bluegrass quintet Monroe Crossing, The Phipps Festival Chorus holiday concerts, the insightful drama "The Rainmaker," the new vaudeville show "Frostbite Follies," the Celtic trio Chulrua, The Phipps Oratorio Society performing Vivaldi’s "Gloria" and Handel's "Ode for St. Cecilia's Day," Barbary Coast Dixieland Show Band, and traditional jazz pianist Bob Milne.
In addition, season subscribers have the first opportunity to purchase tickets to vocalist Elisabeth von Trapp, the granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp.
A season package of any seven events costs $112, which is only $16 per ticket; a five-show package costs $85, only $17 per ticket; and a season subscription to three events is $54, only $18 per ticket. Subscribers are also able to exchange their tickets for another performance free of charge. Ballroom dance parties are scheduled Saturday, July 21 and Aug. 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the dance studio.
Tom Larson will offer a ballroom and Latin dance lesson during the first hour. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Admission is $12 per person.
A one-week ballet intensive for intermediate and advanced ballet students ages 12 and older, offered by Marcia Keegan, Monday-Thursday, July 9-12, 4:30-7:30 p.m. each day, for $99. Includes including ballet, pointe, strengthening and repertoire. Previous pointe experience is highly recommended; otherwise soft shoes may be worn for exercises. Studio demonstration/performance at end of week.
Vinyasa Flow yoga classes continue Tuesdays, 9:30-10:45, and Thursdays, 6:30-7:45 p.m. Gentle yoga is Fridays, 9:30-10:45 a.m. Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch-cards may be purchased for $130 per 10 classes and are good for four months. Punch-cards are good for any of the three classes offered each week. One-day drop-in rate of $16 per class.
Tai chi class
Tai chi classes continue Thursdays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch-cards may be purchased for $96 per eight classes and are good for four months.
Private violin lessons
Private violin lessons for students ages 7-adult will be offered throughout the year by Sarah Bertsch. For more information, contact her at (715) 381-5735.
Private voice lessons
On Mondays with Tony Holt, a former member of the King’s Singers, for ages 11-adult. Lessons focus on singing in a healthy way and enjoying a wide repertoire. Fee is $30 per 30-minute lesson. Call The Phipps for more information, (715) 386-2305.
Summer theater camps
Musical Theater Camp will be offered for students entering grades 7-10 from Monday through Friday, July 9-13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. This camp is an intensive week of training in all types of musical theater. Designed for all levels of experience, this camp offers workshops in acting, dance and movement, voice, and auditioning. An original work will be performed for family and friends on the final day of class. The fee is $265. Enrollment is limited. Students should bring a bag lunch each day.
Acting Ensemble for students entering grades 5 and 6 will be offered Monday through Friday, July 16-20, from 1-4 p.m. to noon each day, for a fee of $135. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Students will work with instructors to explore acting, creating characters, improvisation and performance techniques. They will use the skills developed, along with their creativity, to bring a story to life. This work will be shared with family and friends on the final day of class. Students should bring a snack each day.
Summer art camp
Summer Art Camp, weekly partial and full day classes for preschool through teens in drawing, painting, sculpture, mosaic, animation, fiber arts, jewelry-making, creative dramatics, musical theater, and much more, offered through Aug. 24, is now open for enrollment.
Summer Art Camp class fees range from $19 to $265.
“Message and Metaphor: Ideas that Generate Art,” a two-day creativity workshop for artists and educators, will be offered on Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 15, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., by artist and biology professor Bonnie Ploger.
Participants will explore local, regional, and global connections to the water issues raised in the exhibition “Women and Water Rights: Concerning Water,” which is on view in The Phipps Galleries. Participants will view and discuss the show, engage in outdoor art-making activities along the St. Croix River, and work in the studio with a variety of media. Participants will gain tools to use in the classroom and/or their artistic practice. All should bring a bag lunch and digital camera or cell phone with camera, and dress for walking in woods along the river where shoes may get wet and muddy.
The fee for this workshop is $64, including materials.
Birthday parties, Scout programs, team-building classes
Messes & Masterpieces, a non-profit educational organization that holds creative classes and events for children and adults, now offers birthday parties, Scout programs and team-building classes at The Phipps.
For a Messes & Masterpieces (M & M) birthday party, parents bring party treats and decorations and M & M provides materials and instruction for each child to create a project. Party fee is $124 for up to 10 children, $5 for each additional child up to 15; includes art materials and clean-up, one hour of art-making, and one hour for cake and present opening, as well as a theater tour or gallery visit.
Scout groups can fulfill badge work or belt loop requirements and sports teams can create a team-building experience. Brownie and Girl Scout “try-its” are offered; fee is $10 per child ($100 minimum) and includes materials and clean-up, one hour of project-making time, and one hour for snack, and a theater tour or gallery visit.
