The St. Croix County Fair is this weekend in Glenwood City, and Hudson-area people should consider attending this event which involves people from throughout the county — including Hudson. On this side of the county we often overlook this event, but it is a grand event that has something for everyone.
Most activities begin Thursday and continue through Sunday at the grounds, and a group known as Friends of the St. Croix County Fairplex continues to make the fair bigger and better each year. Formed in 2007, the group hopes to raise $3.5 million to upgrade buildings and grounds.
That process has already begun as 19 acres of land were added to the complex, bringing the total Fairplex grounds to 41 acres. The organization has already completed two new outdoor arenas and opened a new dairy barn last year. At least three more buildings are among the group's goal.
Fairplex volunteers are always looking for more help from individuals and businesses to assist with their fundraising efforts. For more information on the Friends of the St. Croix County Fairplex, call (715) 246-5626 or go to www.stcroixcountyfairplex.com.
The fair itself, of course, has some of the usual items, including a carnival, an impressive list of entertainment, queen coronation, food, beer garden, etc. What you won't find at most community celebrations, however, includes the following: animal exhibits and judging, horse pull, tractor pull, truck pull, ATV mud races, 4x4 mud races, antique tractor pull, reptile show, dog show, horse shows, livestock auction, and more. The entertainment includes kids shows, 4-H shows, professional musicians, battle of the bands, comedians — the list goes on and on as entertainment is provided on the Croix Court beginning in the late morning and continuing late into the evening.
What makes the county fair special, however, is the involvement of the local 4-H clubs. They are involved in many of the activities, and members display their best work and talents for us to see.
Many people don't realize it, but there are six 4-H clubs in or very close to Hudson. They include the Trailblazers, Rolling Hills, Springbrook, Bass Lake Badgers, Roberts Ribbon Reapers the Golden Fireballs. There are 18 clubs throughout the county, involving about 750 youths and 250 adults.
There are also displays at the fair showcasing adult crafts and activities including sewing, quilting, photography, antique displays, food and garden displays and more — see what some of your friends and neighbors have created in the past year.
The St. Croix County Fair is a "free" fair. There is no admission to the grounds (some shows and rides do require an admission fee). There is a $7 per vehicle parking fee if you park near the fairgrounds. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, check out the St. Croix County Fair — you won't be disappointed.
