A 26-year-old Hudson man was injured Tuesday night, July 10, when he slipped walking on rocks near the waterfalls in Willow River State Park and fell about 15 feet.
St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts identified the injured man as John Kaiser.
A sheriff’s deputy who responded to the accident reported that Kaiser was conscious and bleeding from his head, back, arms and legs when rescuers arrived.
He was taken by St. Croix EMS to the Hudson Town Hall on County A, and from there by helicopter to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
The call for help came in at 10:08 p.m., the sheriff said. He said two friends who were with Kaiser said they each had had a beer prior to the accident.
Willow River State Park Superintendent Aaron Moen said a couple of people a year are injured climbing on the rocks surrounding Willow Falls.
The injuries are more likely to happen on a summer Saturday afternoon when there are a few hundred people in the area of the waterfalls, Moen said.
He cautioned park users to be careful around the waterfalls.
“The safest areas are the trails and stairs,” he said. “Once you get off onto those rocks, it’s slippery.”
