Muriel June Riley, age 89, of Hammond, died Thursday, July 26, at Arthur Rose in New Richmond.

Muriel was born on May 27, 1923, in St. Paul, the daughter of Ben and Helen (Niederoski) Salkiewicz. She was raised in New Richmond where she graduated from high school. On Aug. 18, 1948, she was united in marriage to Edward "Ted" Riley at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Richmond. She worked for the Daylight Store in New Richmond earlier in life and as the bookkeeper for the feed mill in Hammond.

She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, reading, golfing, and bowling. Muriel will be remembered as a devoted homemaker who had a sound faith as a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ted; children Don (Debbie) Riley, St. Paul; Greg (Karen) Riley, Madison; and Jean (Karl) Spott, Clayton; nine grandchildren. Sarah (Bret) Walsh, David (Caryn) Riley, Jonathan (Katie) Riley, Heidi Riley, Thor Riley, Amanda Riley, Reed (Krista) Shipley, Nadine Shipley, Ross Shipley; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Geurkink of Woodville; sisters-/brothers-in-law Ollie Riley, Rosemary Vanda, Kelly Strand, Helen (Pat) Donahue; and many loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Elaine Riley; brother, Nilen Salkiewicz; brothers-in-law Stan Geurkink, Jack Riley, Lyle Strand, and Les Vanda.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond, with Fr. Jerry Harris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with casketbearers being her grandsons and grandson-in-law. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the Mass at church Monday morning. Memorials preferred.
