New Hudson police captain’s salary will be $79,000-$83,000

Police Chief Marty Jensen said a bigger salary was needed to attract a qualified replacement for Lt. Eric Atkinson, who will be leaving the Hudson Police Department on Sept. 14 to become chief of the Menomonie Police Department.

The Hudson City Council on Monday night approved Police Chief Marty Jensen’s request to re-title the second-in-command position in his department from lieutenant to captain.

The council on a 4-2 vote also set the salary range for the position at $79,000 to $83,000.

Jensen said a bigger salary was needed to attract a qualified replacement for Lt. Eric Atkinson, who will be leaving the Hudson Police Department on Sept. 14 to become chief of the Menomonie Police Department.

Jensen said Atkinson’s replacement would be responsible for contributing half the amount going into his pension plan, or about $6,000 a year. Without an increase from what Atkinson was being paid, the department’s union-represented sergeants would make almost as much as the new captain, he said.

Jensen asked for a salary range of $80,000 to $83,000.

Alderpersons Lori Bernard and Mary Yacoub voted against Alderperson Randy Morrissette’s motion to set the range at $79,000 to $83,000.

Jensen said the Police and Fire Commission would hire the replacement for Atkinson.
