Dear Editor,
Mitt Romney recently announced his pick of Paul Ryan as his running mate for the office of Vice-President. He couldn’t have made a better choice…for Barack Obama!
Paul Ryan represents all that is wrong with America, more trickle down promises that have not only failed to raise the living standard of middle class Americans, but instead they lowered it. Paul Ryan can best be described as a “High Priest” in the cult of Ayn Rand worship that seems to have permeated the GOP political philosophy for decades. For those unfamiliar with Rand, she is the author of “The Virtue of Selfishness” as well as several popular fictional cult novels. I highly recommend the following resources to become better informed regarding Ayn Rand and her influence on today’s political landscape; “Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right” by Jennifer Burns and a Youtube video found here: http://youtu.be/s7zwO88nRH8.
Paul Ryan, a Catholic, has been sharply criticized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for his evangelization of the “Gospel according to Ayn” as well as for his budget proposals that would devastate an already shredded social safety net for the poor, elderly and disabled. Ryan refers to the safety net as a “hammock”!
"I am afraid that Chairman Ryan's budget reflects the values of his favorite philosopher Ayn Rand rather than the gospel of Jesus Christ," said Father Thomas Reese, a fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.
Catholic Sister Simone Campbell has even organized a multi-state bus tour nicknamed “Nuns on a Bus” to focus attention on the immorality of the Ryan budget plan.
It’s beyond my comprehension how any person of faith can support Paul Ryan, a candidate who exhibits such blatant disregard for the plight of the poor.
