Raiders down defending state champs in opener

The Hudson Raider football team scored on its first two possessions of the game, the scored a pair of touchdowns in the final minute to defeat the defending Division 1 state champion Kenosha Bradford Red Devils, 28-7, in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Newton Field.

The Hudson Raider football team scored on its first two possessions of the game, the scored a pair of touchdowns in the final minute to defeat the defending Division 1 state champion Kenosha Bradford Red Devils, 28-7, in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Newton Field.

Wade Malecha scored on runs of 2 and 14 yards to stake Hudson to a 14-0 first quarter lead. The score remained that way until midway through the fourth quarter when Bradford scored on a 4th-and-1 play from the Raider two yard line.

Hudson’s defense came up with a huge fourth down stop of the Red Devils at Bradford’s 30 yard line with under three minutes remaining, and after a pair of Red Devil penalties and two first down runs by quarterback Mike Hommes, fullback Alex Paulson broke free on 4th-and-1 for a 10-yard touchdown run with 48 seconds remaining.

Dan Kelly returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown with 5 seconds left to make the final 28-7.

The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for Kenosha Bradford dating back to the 2010 WIAA state semifinals.
