Longtime local educator Olson dies

A longtime Hudson educator, Maynard N. Olson, age 77, of North Hudson, died Friday at Christian Community Home in Hudson. Olson was an elementary coordinator at the Hudson Community Schools for 14 years from 1965 to 1979. He spent the last years in the district as a teacher at Fourth Street/Willow River Elementary before retiring in 1992.

Olson was an elementary coordinator at the Hudson Community Schools for 14 years from 1965 to 1979. He spent the last years in the district as a teacher at Fourth Street/Willow River Elementary before retiring in 1992.

Before coming to Hudson, Olson was a teacher in Bay City, Ellsworth and an elementary school principal at Mondovi. His career included the design of the first kindergarten screening program in the State of Wisconsin.

As elementary coordinator, he helped create the first middle school program which included the seventh- and eighth-grade students in Hudson.

He received his teaching diploma from Buffalo County Teachers College and later earned his Bachelor of Science in elementary education from UW- River Falls. He received his master’s in elementary school administration and supervision from the University of Colorado at Greeley in 1963. Additional graduate courses were taken at the University of Wyoming at Laramie.

He was a life member of the Northwestern Wisconsin Education Association and served as its president in 1973, and was also a member of the Wisconsin Elementary Principals Association. He was also president of the Wisconsin Elementary Supervisors Association. Olson was active in the community and his church.

He is survived by his wife Carol and three sons, Greg (Kathy) of Lakeland, Minn., Kevin (Chrystal) of Blaine, Minn., and Mark of Park City, Utah. For more details, see his obituary on page 4C.

A funeral service is at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church (Downtown Campus; 1205 6th St.). Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Bakken-Young Funeral Home, Hudson, and also Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Willow River Cemetery.
