Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy didn’t even wait for the Mason Crosby question to be asked, when he said he would stick with his troubled kicker.
Crosby missed three field goal attempts, two that counted, during Green Bay’s 24-20 win at Detroit on Sunday.
Crosby kicked a 50-yarder wide right in perfect indoor conditions at the end of the first half, but the Lions called a time-out just before the snap, so he got another chance. He missed it wide left. He also missed a 38-yarder.
At the end of the game, the Packers decided to see if Crosby could boost his confidence, and he hit a 39-yarder with 19 seconds left.
McCarthy said afterward, We will not blink as far as our commitment to him.” Crosby has now made 11 of 18 field goals this year, the second-worst among NFL kickers.
He said he booted the ball well during warm-ups, but he was off-line during the game.
Crosby also said he doesn’t even think about the possibility that the Packers will bring in somebody to replace or compete with him.
Packers move into first Bears lose
The Packers could move into a first-place tie with Chicago in the NFC North Division if the Bears lose Monday night at San Francisco.
The Packers are a half-game back at 7-3 after coming from behind to beat last-place Detroit Sunday at Ford Field.
Aaron Rodgers threw the game-winning touchdown with 1:55 left, a 22-yard strike to Randall Cobb.
Rodgers admitted that the Packers didn’t play their best, but they were still able to come through when it was needed. Rodgers completed 19 of 27 passes for 236 yards. His other TD was a 20-yarder to tight end Jermichael Finley, who scored for the first time since the first week of the regular season.
M.D. Jennings returned an interception 72 yards for Green Bay’s other touchdown.
Detroit outgained the Packers in total yards, 362 to 314. But the Pack got the better of a sloppy game. An interception by Rodgers was Green Bay’s only turnover, while Matthew Stafford threw two picks and the Lions lost a pair of fumbles as they dropped to 4-6.
The injury-riddled Packers, playing without seven starters, won their fifth straight.
Coach Mike McCarthy is now 12-1 lifetime over Detroit. The Packers face the Giants at New York next Sunday night.
