Pro-Cuts opened in Hudson on Nov. 6.

The independently owned franchise, a division of Regis Corp., specializes in haircuts for men. It is designed around a sports theme and youngsters can practice their basketball skills while waiting. The ‘menu’ is simple. Customers have two choices and they sell only one line of hair care products, American Crew. High end touches like hot tea tree face towels, neck and shoulder massages, semi-private stations with sinks and individual televisions speak to the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction.

“There is no up-sale here,” said Dave Williams, “Guys want to get in and get out.” For the Williams, the Hudson location was a perfect fit for them.

For the California natives, it seemed like a good time to settle down. The couple candidly said they have been nomads for the last 18 years. Both career employees of Trader Joes, they have more or less crisscrossed the country opening stores. Presently Dave works at Trader Joes in Woodbury and Shelley at the Trader Joes in St. Paul. They most recently were in the Washington D.C. metro area and jumped at the chance to move to the Midwest.

“I have worked for Trader Joes most of my life so we started to look for something different that we could invest in for the future,” said Dave. “Looking at the economy we felt this may be recession proof. No matter what, people are going to need haircuts”

The couple researched different options and settled on Pro-Cuts which has 140 locations in North America.

“We felt confident that Regis was big and stable and I can’t say enough about how amazing their franchise department has been,” said Shelley. The couple was told the Hudson location was available.

“We think it is a perfect place,” said Dave. “We came over to look at it and it was a slam dunk.” Both Shelley and Dave praised the Hudson Chamber of Commerce for their support and welcome to the Hudson business community.

“Now we are here to stay,” said Shelley. “We were really excited to be in the middle-west. We feel blessed to be in Hudson.”

The shop has six stations and when fully staffed will have six to eight employees.

“We want it to be fun,” said Shelley. “It has an open, easy atmosphere that appeals to kids and adults.”

Even though the concept is geared towards men, over 30 percent of their business so far has been women.

“We love this location,” said Shelley. “We can get everything done in this little circle (around the Carmichael Road I-94 interchange).

Shelley will continue to work part-time at Trader Joes and Dave will continue his 28 year, full-time career with them.
