The Hudson boys’ hockey team scored three third period goals to shake a pesky Menomonie team and complete a season sweep of the Mustangs with a 6-2 victory Thursday night, Jan. 17 at Gornick Arena.
The Raiders built a 3-1 first period lead but Menomonie scored the only goal of the second period to make it a 3-2 game before Hudson broke the game open in the third.
Michael Hommes accounted for two of the Raiders’ third period goals while Adam Lipps capped the scoring with under five minutes remaining.
“Menomonie played a very tough game and tried to get us away from what we do well,” Raider coach Brooks Lockwood said. “After we started with a strong first period they were able to outplay us in the second and keep the game close. Fortunately in the third we got great play out of our seniors.”
Lockwood said the game provided a good learning experience for the Raiders, who defeated the Mustangs 8-1 in their previous meeting Dec. 6 in Menomonie.
“We had a lot of success against Menomonie in the last game, but now that we are having some success throughout the conference, teams are going to try and take that away from us and give us their best effort,” he said. “It was good to see the kids battle through that and get us back to what we do well.”
The win kept the Raiders undefeated in Big Rivers Conference play at 7-0-0 while improving their overall record to 13-3-0. Hudson enters this week tied with Eau Claire Memorial (7-2-0) for first place in the BRC standings with Rice Lake (6-2-0) two points behind.
The Raiders traveled to Rice Lake this past Tuesday, Jan. 22, and will host Eau Claire Memorial Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at Gornick Arena.
