Hockey: Girls skate into 2nd place tie

The Raider girls’ hockey team played to a 2-2 tie with Chippewa Falls/Menomonie last Thursday night, Jan. 17, to move into a tie for second place in the Big Rivers Conference standings.
Last Monday, the Raiders downed Black River Falls, 7-5, in a nonconference matchup to give them a record of 5-7-1 overall. They also dropped an 11-1 decision to third-ranked Hayward/Spooner Friday to give them a record of 5-7-1 heading into this Thursday’s (Jan. 24) contest against BRC leader and eighth-ranked St. Croix Valley (River Falls/Baldwin-Woodville/St. Croix Central).
Last Thursday against Chippewa Falls/Menomonie, the Raiders scored a pair of second period goals to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Sydney Squires opened the scoring at the 10:56 mark, assisted by Sara Iacobello. Then, with two seconds remaining in the period, Squires won a face-off back to Iacobello, who rifled a shot past Cardinal goalie Lauren Scobie, to give Hudson a two-goal advantage.
The Cardinals peppered Raider goalie Julia Joseph with shots in the third period and cut the Raider lead in half with just under five minutes remaining before scoring the tying goal with an extra skater on the ice with 28 seconds left in regulation.
Joseph finished with 32 saves as the Cardinals outshot the Raiders, 34-25.
Last Monday against Black River Falls, Iacobello netted a hat trick, Squires had two goals and two assists and Ali Takkunen had two goals and one assist in a 7-5 Raider victory.
Iacobello scored the only goal of the first period, assisted by Squires, then extended the Raider lead to 2-0 with a power play goal early in the second period with Ali Takkunen picking up an assist.
Black River Falls answered with three goals in less than three minutes to take a 3-2 lead before Takkunen scored a pair of goals ten seconds apart to tilt the score back in Hudson’s favor. Iacobello and Squires picked up assists on Takkunen’s first goal while the second was unassisted.
Black River Falls made it a 4-4 game with a goal late in the period, then took a 5-4 lead early in the third, before Iacobello scored her third goal of the game, unassisted on a Raider power play, and Squires scored twice in the final minute, the second into an empty net, to make the final 7-5. Caitlyn Bjornstad earned an assist on the go-ahead goal.
Nali Mullan finished with 19 saves as the Raiders outshot the Tigers, 34-24.
Friday, Hayward/Spooner scored three goals in the first period and added four more in both the second and third periods to post an 11-1 victory. Bjornstad scored the lone Raider goal, assisted by Maddie Misura. Joseph made 26 saves in two periods of play and Mullan stopped 14 shots as the Hurricanes outshot Hudson 40-11.
Thursday’s game against the St. Croix Valley Fusion begins at 7 p.m. at Gornick Arena.
